I formated the partitions adding the "esp" and "boot" labels to the 500MB made sure that it had the "EFI System" type, the other partitions were formated ext4 made sure that it had the "Linux filesystem" type. Recently I installed two driver packages: firmware-misc-nonfree 20161130-4 nvidia-driver 390.87-8~deb9u1 Obviously this replaced the nouveau driver which was used before.
