The actual problem about putting 40's on a factory 44 is the fact the axle is not wide enough to run the tires without wheel adapters and really low back spaced wheels. Not only does that throw the scrub radius out the window but puts a lot more stress on the ball joints and unit bearings.

You want 5.38's if you are even remotely considering 40's, and 5.13's would even be a bit light for 38's imo. We usually do 5.13's for 35's.
